Halfway Bear (Sort of)

We’re through week nine of the NFL season, which is the halfway mark, and the Chicago Bears have played eight games, which is as close to half of 17 as you can get, so it’s time, once again, for me to assess where my beloved Bears are.

The Bears sit at 5-3, tied for second place with Detroit in the NFC North, half a game back of Green Bay. I’m thrilled to be in this position, but at the same time I can’t help but rue what could have been.

The second quarter of the season started well. The Bears exorcised the demons of the Matt Eberflus era for themselves and their fanbase when they won a hard fought battle against the Washington Commanders, the team that lit the fire that eventually burned down the Bears 2024 season with that Hail Mary loss.

The Bears got the running game going against Washington, D’Andre Swift was the best player on the field that game. Even better, the Bears run defense stiffened up against what was the best rushing offense in the NFL.

Next up, the Bears had the lowly New Orleans Saints and they took care of business. They made things a little more uncomfortable than they needed to be with defensive lapses right before and right after halftime, but the Bears were pretty much in control the entire way.

Swift was, once again the best player on the field, but fellow running back, rookie Kyle Monangai had a great game too. Defensive veterans Kevin Byard & Tremaine Edmunds continued their stellar seasons with each getting an interception.

I wrote earlier about the disappointment of the blown lead against Minnesota in the opener, so I won’t elaborate on that further. I will, however, express the regret of losing in week 8 to a Baltimore Ravens team playing without Lamar Jackson.

Baltimore was a better team than their record indicates, and truth be told I had long written that game off as a loss, but it’s still a tough pill to swallow because the Bears definitely had a chance.

No offense to Snoop Huntley, who is a much better backup for the Ravens than Cooper Rush, but he’s not in the same stratosphere as Lamar Jackson. The Bears defense made him look like it, though.

Beyond that, the Bears shot themselves, repeatedly, in the foot. Pre-snap penalties and just terrible execution in the red zone forced them to settle for field goals on their first two drives. The Bears were dominating the first quarter, then the Ravens woke up.

Caleb Williams didn’t play well. The running game was less explosive than it had been, and the defense didn’t produce a turnover, after feasting for four straight weeks. What’s more is the Ravens had free running receivers all game.

Baltimore is a very good football team and I fully expect them to make a run at the AFC North crown now that they’re healthy, but I can’t help but wonder if things would have gone differently had the Bears scored touchdowns instead of field goals on those first two drives.

If the Bears end up missing the playoffs by a game or two, I’ll look back on this loss and the earlier loss to Minnesota with even bigger regrets.

Week nine offered a chance to bounce back with a matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals without Joe Burrow. The Bengals offense has been better since they acquired Joe Flacco, but their defense is atrocious. If ever there was a get right game for Caleb Williams, this was it.

Williams and the offense were superb. Kyle Monangai started in place of an injured Swift and had a monster game. DJ Moore had his best game of the season and rookie tight end Colston Loveland had his breakout performance, including what may be the play of the season for the Bears.

It wasn’t a great game for the Bears defense or special teams, and it looked like they were about to have an epic collapse that we fans have gotten all too familiar with, but these Bears are different. Instead of finding ways to lose every week, Ben Johnson’s Bears are finding ways to win.

Things I’m Happy About

Darnell Wright. Photo Credit- Jeff Hanisch/ USA Today Sports
  • The Offensive Line: It seems like ages since the Bears have had an offensive line this good. Since the bye, the line has been the strength of this team. The Bears couldn’t run the ball, at all, before the bye. Since, they’re one of the best rushing offenses in the NFL. Caleb Williams’ sack numbers are way down, and honestly almost every sack he has taken is on him for holding the ball too long. I think it’s very possible that the Bears have two offensive linemen make the Pro Bowl this year. Joe Thuney is a lock because of his career body of work as well as his play this season. I think if they stay in contention through the end of the season that Darnell Wright could also earn the honor. Wright has been nothing short of dominant this season. Drew Dalman & Jonah Jackson have also been pretty good additions to the offensive line, and while I don’t think Theo Benedet is the long term solution at left tackle, he has been serviceable and has solidified the unit as a whole.
Kyle Monangai. Photo Credit- Joseph Maiorana/ Imagn Images
  • Running Backs: Before their bye, the Bears couldn’t run the ball… at all. The only reason they had a yards per carry above 3.0, as a team, were because of Caleb Williams’ scrambles. There was rampant speculation the Bears might be in the market for a running back at the trade deadline, at the very least many fans were looking at the 2026 draft. Then, something happened. The new look offensive line started to gel and the running backs took advantage. D’Andre Swift has been the best offensive weapon for the Bears since the break, until he sat out versus the Bengals due to injury. Rookie Kyle Monangai might not have completely supplanted Swift, but he’s at least forced Ben Johnson to make the RB rotation more of a time share. Swift and Monangai aren’t Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, but Ben Johnson may have found his discount “Sonic & Knuckles”.
Tremaine Edmunds. Photo Credit- Mark J Rebilas/ Imagn Images
  • Some of the Defense: The Bears defense has been routinely gashed this season, but they’ve proven to be opportunistic ball hawks. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and safety Kevin Byard have been especially good. At the start of the season, I thought this might be the last year we saw Edmunds & Byard in a Bears uniform, Byard is a free agent after the season and I thought Edmunds could end up being a cap casualty. Now, I think both will be back in 2026, and Edmunds may get an extension that could lower his cap hit. The Bears cornerbacks have been ravaged by injuries (more on that later) but Tyrique Stevenson has stepped up. He returned from his own injury against the Bengals and he wasn’t good, but he’s been mostly good all season. Don’t look now, but Montez Sweat is looking like the player he was when the Bears first traded for him. If the Bears could add a competent complimentary pass rusher, Sweat could post even bigger numbers.

Things I’m Concerned About

  • Caleb Williams: In particular, his accuracy and his tendency to fall back on “Superman mode”. Williams is still good for a few WOW throws every game, which makes the mistakes that much more frustrating. I think everything is tied together. Caleb naturally wants to hit the big play on every drop back, when the initial read isn’t there is where the issues start. Caleb’s instinct is to use his natural ability to make a play, but Ben Johnson is coaching him to take the outlet provided. It’s a shift in thinking for Williams and it’s a work in progress. I think on the shorter, ‘check down’ throws that he remembers late what he’s being coached to do and he rushes the throw. Footwork and mechanics are off and his throws are inaccurate. I can see growth, though, and I think Ben Johnson is molding him into the quarterback he wants. If he can improve his accuracy and speed up his decision making, after the first read, Caleb Williams and this Bears offense could really take off.
  • Rome Odunze: Odunze got off to such a hot start, but he’s really cooled off, including getting completely shut out against the Bengals. He’s still Williams’ number one target and his numbers over the last four games should be better. He had a beautiful touchdown catch taken off the board against Washington because of a questionable penalty and he should have had a touchdown against Cincinnati, but he dropped it. That’s the issue I have with Odunze right now. Even in his best games, Odunze is good for at least one drop a game. Sure, they’re not always the easiest catches, but a true number one receiver has to come down with some of them. Odunze is usually the guy Caleb looks for when he’s in trouble or the Bears need a big play, but if the Bengals game is any indication, I think Colston Loveland might start pushing him for those ‘gotta have it’ targets.
Kyler Gordon. Photo Credit- Michael Reaves/ Getty Images
  • Kyler Gordon: This could be the entire Bears cornerback room, but I’m going to focus on Gordon. This is tough, because when he’s on the field, Gordon is spectacular. He’s one of the best nickel corners in the NFL, when healthy. Therein lies the rub. As one person said on social media, “Kyler Gordon is made of wet newspaper”. The old saying goes ‘the best ability is availability’, and unfortunately Gordon is, too often, unavailable. The Bears have a much better defense, both against the run & pass, when Gordon plays, the question is will he ever be durable enough?
  • Special Teams: Anyone who has watched multiple Bears games this year knew that the opening kickoff return for a touchdown that Cincinnati had was coming. The Bears kickoff coverage has been suspect all season. They gave up a big return to the Raiders after taking a late lead, only Josh Blackwell’s blocked field goal saved them. Against Baltimore, a great punt downed at the one yard line was wiped out by an illegal formation. They also got an illegal formation penalty on a kickoff against Cincinnati. To me, this kind of stuff falls on the coordinator. Richard Hightower has a good reputation throughout the league, but I think he’s on the hot seat right now. Another special teams issue is more about personnel than scheme. Cairo Santos has been a pretty good kicker for the Bears, but I have to wonder if his days are numbered. When you’ve got kickers throughout the league hitting 60+ yard field goals (shout out to new record holder Cam Little) and most kickers being nearly automatic from 50-60, it’s concerning when you have a kicker with much more limited range. There’s also been at least one instance where the Bears needed a kickoff to be blasted through the end zone & Santos just can’t do it. Jake Moody filled in for a couple games and he looked good. He did have one blocked and his inconsistencies that led to his release from San Francisco are well known, but he’s got a much stronger leg than Santos and I have to wonder if the Bears might be better off with him as our kicker.

Looking Ahead

The Bears have already matched their win total from last season and they’re firmly in the mix in the NFC and the North division. The next quarter of the season will determine if they’re playing meaningful games in December.

  • vs New York Giants- Flat out must win game for the Bears. The Giants are a much more inferior team and the game is at home. Chicago has no margin for error if they want to make a playoff push. They have a tough schedule in December and they cannot afford to lose games they should win.
  • @ Minnesota Vikings– The Bears get a chance to avenge their season opening loss. The Vikings present the same problem for the Bears that Cincy did: elite receivers against a depleted secondary. But JJ McCarthy isn’t Joe Flacco. He hasn’t even played 3 full games in the NFL yet. It won’t be easy in Minnesota, but winning this will announce to the world that the Bears are contenders.
  • vs Pittsburgh Steelers- The Bears welcome their old nemesis, Aaron Rodgers, back to Soldier Field. I want this one very, very badly. Not only do I want to beat Rodgers in the worst way, but with several really tough games after this, a win here could go a long way to keeping them in contention. It is winnable. Pittsburgh’s defense hasn’t been great and neither has their offensive line.
  • @ Philadelphia Eagles- I’m not delusional, barring an unforeseen catastrophe befalling the defending champions, the Bears are not winning this one. However, if they can win their previous three games, that puts them at 8-4 entering December and you have to feel pretty good about that. I’m looking at this Black Friday matchup as a litmus test, I just want the Bears to look competitive.
  • @ Green Bay Packers- The Bears open December with a trip to Lambeau. You have no idea how great a win here would feel. Caleb Williams would move to 2-0 in Green Bay & the Bears would officially announce their presence in the realm of contenders.

If the Bears can go 4-1 in this stretch, we’re going to the playoffs, baby! That might be a lot to ask, though. 3-2 puts that at 8-5 with four to play, there are tough games down the stretch but winnable ones too.

Anything less than.500 in this stretch and we’re probably looking at elimination at some point in December.

Halfway Predictions Reboot

AFC PLAYOFFS

  • AFC East Winner– Buffalo Bills
  • AFC North Winner– Baltimore Ravens
  • AFC South Winner– Indianapolis Colts
  • AFC West WinnerDenver Broncos

I think Buffalo will eventually overtake New England, but I’m not counting the Patriots out. Baltimore is finally healthy and I think they’ll go on a run. Indianapolis will cruise in the South and Denver will hold off the Chiefs, barely.

  • AFC Wildcards– New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers

I think the Patriots and Chiefs are locks and the seventh seed is up for grabs. I like the Chargers, but they just lost Joe Alt and they really struggled with him out earlier this season. Jacksonville is wildly inconsistent and even though I expect Pittsburgh to falter down the stretch, they always seem to sneak in.

  • AFC CHAMPION– Kansas City Chiefs

Here it is, the fact is that if some team doesn’t kill the Chiefs in December, they’re not getting beat in January. Buffalo and Baltimore have proven they can’t beat Mahomes when it matters. Maybe one of the upstarts, like Indy or New England, can find a way, but I’m not ready to pick them yet.

NFC PLAYOFFS

  • NFC East Winner– Philadelphia Eagles
  • NFC North Winner– Detroit Lions
  • NFC South Winner– Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • NFC West Winner– Los Angeles Rams

Philly & Tampa are locks. The North is up for grabs, but I like the Lions to prevail. The West will be a dogfight between LA & Seattle

  • NFC Wildcards– Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears

The runner up in the West should get in, I think that’s Seattle. Same goes for the North and Green Bay has the advantage of a tie on their record. The final spot comes down to San Francisco, Chicago & Carolina. Call me a homer, but I think the Bears will do it with a week 17 win in San Francisco.

  • NFC CHAMPION– Philadelphia Eagles

Philly had a two game stumble after a 4-0 start, but they’ve righted the ship and once again look like the team to beat. I think the Rams are their biggest obstacle with the Bucs lurking.

  • SUPER BOWL– Philadelphia Eagles over Kansas City Chiefs

  • MVPRight now, my pick for MVP is Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield & Patrick Mahomes are in the mix, as well. Even though the MVP almost always goes to a QB, I think Colts running back Jonathan Taylor should be in the conversation, too.
Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts. Photo Credit- Grace Hollars/ Indy Star/ USA Today Network via Imagn Images
  • Offensive Player of the YearMy pick is Jonathan Taylor and I think he should be in the MVP conversation. Among non-quarterbacks, Seattle wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba & San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey are contenders. Some dark horse candidates include Cincinnati wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, Buffalo running back James Cook & Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson.
Myles Garrett, defensive end, Cleveland Browns. Photo Credit- Ken Blaze/ Imagn Images
  • Defensive Player of the YearI doubt he gets it because the Browns are not in contention, but Myles Garrett is the best defensive player in the NFL, in my opinion. Denver’s Nik Bonitto, the Rams’ Byron Young & Detroit’s Aidan Hutchinson are also contenders.
Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts head coach. Photo Credit- Justin K Aller/ Getty Images
  • Coach of the YearNobody saw this Colts team coming. Head coach Shane Steichen is my current favorite for coach of the year, but New England’s Mike Vrabel & Chicago’s Ben Johnson are strong contenders.
  • Offensive Rookie of the YearTampa Bay wide receiver Emeka Egbuka is still my favorite. NY Giants running back was starting to make noise until he was lost for the season. Cleveland running back Quinshon Judkins is probably Egbuka’s biggest challenger now, with Carolina wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan lurking, Two Chicago Bears rookies might have announced their presence in the race this weekend, running back Kyle Monangai & tight end Colston Loveland could make a late push.
Carson Schwesinger, linebacker, Cleveland Browns. Photo Credit- Jim Dedmon/ Imagn Images
  • Defensive Rookie of the YearI think Cleveland linebacker Carson Schwesinger has surged ahead in this race. NY Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter is still a contender as are Cleveland’s Mason Graham, Seattle’s Nick Emmanwori, Denver’s Jahdae Barron & Philadelphia’s Andrew Mukuba.
Daniel Jones, quarterback, Indianapolis Colts. Photo Credit- Michael Hickey/ Imagn Images
  • Comeback Player of the Year: Does a player have to come back from an injury or just from mediocrity? I’m not sure. Nobody expected Daniel Jones to play at this level, and for that reason I think he’s the heavy favorite for this award. The Chargers’ Quentin Johnston is a distant second.
Quenton Nelson, guard, Indianapolis Colts. Photo Credit- Trevor Ruszkowski/ USA Today Sports
  • Protector of the Year: This is a tough award to predict because it’s a first time award. I’m going with the best player on the best run blocking offensive line, Indianapolis guard Quenton Nelson.

BJ & Da’Bears: Week 8 Recap & Week 9 Preview

Week 8 Recap

BJ & Da’Bears vs Nerves of Steel

Another week, another blown late lead for BJ & Da’ Bears. This one wasn’t a Monday Night heartbreak, and it didn’t come down to one play. I only had a slight lead going into the Sunday night game and my opponent had Jordan Love. Only a miracle would have saved me.

I’m now 2-6. I think it’s time to start thinking about next season. I’m opening the trade block. All players available, looking to stockpile some draft picks for next season.

Caleb Williams was better this week, slightly. He still hasn’t scored a TD in two weeks, though. It’s hard to win fantasy football games when your QB gets single digits.

Kimani Vidal had an excellent week for me, he’s actually my MVP for the week. His 18 points helped me win the RB battle, 23-17.

Interestingly, I finally cut bait on TreVeyon Henderson, only to have him picked up by my opponent. He had his best showing in weeks, but still only managed 3 fantasy points. Such a major disappointment this year, and a big reason my team is in the hole it is.

Rome Odunze broke his mini slump, though he didn’t find the end zone. Tetairoa McMillan also had a nice game. Quentin Johnston, however, put up a goose egg in a game where the Chargers offense lit it up.

Speaking of Chargers, I picked up Oronde Gadsden II, and he had a decent game, continuing my recent string of strong TE performances.

My streamed defense, the Atlanta Falcons, was a total dud.

Week 9 Preview

BJ & Da’ Bears vs Delta House Blutarskys

Projected Lineups & Reserves

I’m currently heavily favored in this matchup, but that will change. I expect my opponent to get Amon-Ra St. Brown & TJ Hockenson into their lineup.

My opponent, as you might have discerned, is a Cowboys fan. Dallas has a plus matchup at home against the Arizona Cardinals. This bodes well for my opponent outdoing his projections.

I’ve opened the trade block, so my lineup could look vastly different come Sunday.

My keys to the week, as they currently stand:

  1. Caleb Williams: Williams has a fantastic matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. He’s been rather pedestrian the last couple weeks, this could be the week he erupts.
  2. Trey McBride: McBride was on a heater before the bye, now Kyler Murray likely returns at quarterback. McBride has an excellent matchup against Dallas, but Murray scares me.
  3. Brian Thomas Jr: Thomas has been a major disappointment thus far, but he showed signs of breaking out before the bye. He gets a plus matchup against the Raiders this week.
  4. Kimani Vidal: Vidal has seized the opportunity afforded him by the injuries to the Chargers backfield. He gets another plus matchup against Tennessee this week and I need him to continue his hot streak.

Trash Pandas: Week 8 Recap & Week 9 Preview

Week 8 Recap

Trash Pandas vs Township Gilmores

Huge win for the Trash Pandas this week! My opponent was the defending league champion & this marks the first winning streak of my season. I’m now 4-4 and right in the thick of the playoff race.

I dealt with a huge bye week, only one player on my bench actually had a game this week, and hopefully some key injuries have been resolved.

Every win in fantasy football involves a little bit of luck, and I had it this week. Despite losing the RB battle 53-0, I won at every other position, except TE where I only lost by 2. My opponent made some major managerial mistakes, leaving 98 points on their bench, an actual cost of 87 points to their lineup.

What should have been a blowout loss for me instead became a signature win for the Trash Pandas.

Justin Herbert seems to have regained his early season form, putting up over thirty points for the second straight game. I won the QB battle, 33-8, because my opponent started Baker Mayfield over Daniel Jones.

Six teams being on bye really messed with my RBs. I hit the waiver wire and added Justice Hill & Brashard Smith. It didn’t work out so well, and I predictably got crushed at RB, but it didn’t hurt me.

Rome Odunze broke his mini slump and paced my WR group with 17 points. Jordan Addison had his lowest yardage output since his return, but he did score a TD. Quentin Johnston, unfortunately, put up a goose egg but that was offset by Jerry Jeudy’s goose egg for my opponent. I won the WR battle, 25-7.

I lost the TE battle, 4-2, but my opponent made a gigantic mistake here. They played Cade Otton over Tucker Kraft. That decision cost them 28 points.

The other huge mistake made by my opponent was starting the Cincinnati Bengals defense over the Baltimore Ravens. Cincy put up negative 11 points, while Baltimore had 15. That’s a 26 point swing.

Andy Borregales won the kicker battle for me, 17-1, and I considered naming him my MVP, but instead I’m giving it to my waiver wire add at LB, Tatum Bethune, for posting my highest IDP total this season, 14 points.

Week 9 Preview

Trash Pandas vs Steel City Mafia

Projected Lineups & Reserves

My opponent this week has been on a similar trajectory as me. They’ve won two in a row to get themselves back to .500 and in the thick of the playoff race.

They have some minor bye week issues and more injury issues than I have, hence why I’m currently favored.

Here’s my keys to the week:

  1. Justin Herbert: I think QB is where my real advantage in this matchup lies. Herbert gets a great matchup against Tennessee and he’s been on a heater the last two weeks.
  2. Jahmyr Gibbs: Gibbs is the only true fantasy superstar in this matchup and he’s coming off a bye after a monster performance against Tampa Bay. Another big performance against Minnesota would go a long way to securing me a victory.
  3. Rome Odunze & Marvin Harrison Jr: Both Odunze & Harrison have plus matchups versus Cincinnati & Dallas, respectively. Odunze has been a WR1 most of the season and just broke his mini slump, he should have another big week. Harrison is tougher to predict, he’s been up and down since entering the NFL and he’s coming off a concussion.
  4. Brock Bowers: Bowers missed two games due to injury and had his bye week last week. The hope is that he’s ready to go and even though the Raiders are a mess, a healthy Bowers is a fantasy cheat code.

Week 8 NFL Picks

Last Week: 12-3 / 9-6

Season: 68-40 / 54-54

Minnesota Vikings @ Los Angeles Chargers (-3.5)

PHI 24-20

Miami Dolphins @ Atlanta Falcons (-7.5)

Jets might make a change at QB, won’t change the results.

CIN 24-20

San Francisco 49ers @ Houston Texans (+1.5)

BJ & Da’ Bears: Week 7 Recap & Week 8 Preview

Week 7 Recap

BJ & Da’ Bears vs The Tweedle Beetles

Second straight Monday night heartbreak for BJ & Da’ Bears. Despite my team not having a great week, neither did my opponent. I held a lead into the second half of the Seattle-Houston game, but lost on the Houston defense’s sack/fumble/touchdown in a game they were otherwise dominated.

My team didn’t deserve to win this week, but it’s still gut wrenching to come so close only to have it ripped away from you.

Caleb Williams had his worst week of the season, managing only two points in a plus matchup. I lost the QB battle 11-2.

Running back was another wasteland for me.i was outscored 19-8 at RB.

Quentin Johnston returned and scored a TD, but my other three WRs combined for 6 points. However, I only lost the WR battle by 3 points, 17-14, because my opponent had a player put up a goose egg.

Trey McBride was my lone bright spot. He’s really come on lately and won the TE battle for me, 23-11, despite my opponent playing two tight ends.

Ka’imi Fairbairn was decent, winning the kicker matchup, 10-2.

I streamed the Chicago Bears defense, who did well with 18 points. Unfortunately, my opponent’s defense put up 22.

Trey McBride earns my MVP for the week, hopefully the rest of my team can start to complement my TE.

Week 8 Preview

BJ & Da’ Bears vs Nerves of Steel

Projected Lineups

I’m a slight favorite at this point, mainly because my opponent doesn’t have a RB for his starting lineup because of byes. I’ve got bye issues, too, but I’m at least able to field a full lineup.

This game could come down to which of our reserves come through for us.

My keys to the week:

  1. Caleb Williams: Williams is coming off his worst game of the season. I need him to bounce back. I don’t need him to have a monster week, just league average would be nice. He’s got a decent matchup against Baltimore to do so.
  2. Rome Odunze: Odunze goes hand in hand with Williams. If one has a good game, the other likely does too. Odunze has had two down games in a row, I need him to get back to his early season form.
  3. Rachaad White: White is the best RB in this matchup & I need him to show it. He’s got a plus matchup versus New Orleans. He could very well carry me to victory this week.
  4. Kimani Vidal: Vidal is pretty much the only healthy RB the Chargers have left. The matchup against Minnesota isn’t great, but Vidal should get plenty of opportunities.

Trash Pandas: Week 7 Recap & Week 8 Preview

Week 7 Recap

Trash Pandas vs Lancaster Lightning

What a difference a week makes. Last week this team managed a measly 49 points. This week, one of my players outdid that completely by himself and another came damn close.

Big win for the Trash Pandas, stopping a two game skid & moving to 3-0 within my division.

Justin Herbert exploded this week for 54 points! He outscored my opponent’s QB by 37!

I played 2 RBs to my opponent’s 3, and one of my RBs, TreVeyon Henderson, put up a goose egg, yet I still won the RB matchup by 35 points because Jahmyr Gibbs romped for 47 points on Monday night.

Despite having three WRs in my lineup to my opponent’s two, I lost the WR battle, 40-31, but it wasn’t a terrible week. Quentin Johnston was back and scored a touchdown. Jordan Addison entered my lineup for the first time and put up 19 points. Rome Odunze was the only downer with his second straight dud.

I scooped up Dalton Schultz off the secondary waiver wire and he won me the TE matchup, 10-7.

Philadelphia’s defense added a touchdown to help my efforts.

My MVP goes to Gibbs, whose huge Monday night turned a probable heartbreaking loss into a breathe easy win.

Week 8 Preview

Trash Pandas vs Township Gilmores

Projected Lineups & Reserves

I get the defending league champion this week and it couldn’t come on a worse week. My roster is decimated by bye weeks. I need to find a RB, preferably two so I don’t have to play TreVeyon Henderson against Cleveland.

It’s going to take some major luck for me to pull this one off, but here’s the keys to the week:

  1. Justin Herbert: Herbert had a monster game last week. It’s asking a lot for him to repeat it, but I could definitely use it.
  2. Dalton Schultz: Schultz actually had a nice game last week, he saw tons of targets. It would be nice if he saw the same volume this week.
  3. Rome Odunze: Odunze needs to break out of his mini slump if I want any shot at pulling off this upset.
  4. Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles defense needs a much better showing this week than the last time they played the Giants when they put up negative points.

The Hot Seat

Now that the Tennessee Titans have become the first team to fire their head coach this season, I thought I’d take a look at some other coaches on the hot seat. Listed in order of most likely to be out of a job come January:

White Hot

  • Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins are a mess. They have issues on both sides of the ball and in the locker room. They were not even competitive against the Cleveland Browns, not exactly a juggernaut. McDaniel’s seat is nuclear hot. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s gone before Thanksgiving. Side Note- I think Miami will be breaking in a new coach and quarterback in 2026.
Photo Credit- Norm Hall/ Getty Images
  • Jonathan Gannon, Arizona Cardinals: When the Cardinals organization imposed a fine on Gannon for his altercation with running back Emari Demercado on the sideline during the game against the Tennessee Titans, Gannon’s seat became hot. With each mounting loss, the seat gets hotter. To be honest, Gannon is an example of a guy who probably rushed into being a head coach without fully looking into the situation he was getting into. The Cardinals, and Gannon, are tied to Kyler Murray and, sadly, that was never going to work. Murray has never shown a consistent ability to be a top tier quarterback and the Cardinals investment in him had hamstrung them in other areas. The offense has actually looked better without him the last two weeks. Gannon’s best hope to make it through the season may be to stick with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback and maybe, just maybe, they win a game or two along the way.

Smoldering

Photo Credit- Kai River Kanzer/ New York Post
  • Brian Daboll, New York Giants: Not only do I think Daboll is safe for the rest of this season, I think there’s a chance he returns in 2026. The reason? Jaxson Dart. Dart was Daboll’s hand picked quarterback and he’s looked the part. If he continues to grow, Daboll could be retained. BUT… Meltdowns like Sunday’s against Denver don’t help his cause. Sure, coaches aren’t making the plays on the field, it was the players that made the mistakes that allowed that improbable comeback, but Daboll made questionable decisions. He should never have put Dart in the position to throw that critical interception. There is such a fine line in this sport. Had the Giants won that game that would have been two big time upsets in a row and Daboll wouldn’t even be on this list, but here we are.
Photo Credit- Ken Blaze/ Imagn Images
  • Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns: Personally, I think Cleveland would be stupid to move on from a two time coach of the year, but the Browns have a habit of making stupid decisions. Cleveland’s troubles are a direct result of the stupid decision to jettison Baker Mayfield in favor of Deshaun Watson, and give Watson an enormous contract, fully guaranteed, that he’s come nowhere close to living up to and Cleveland has no way to get out of. Stefanski could end up being the fall guy, deserved or not. He’d be a top candidate for any opening if he is let go.

Waiting on a Spark

Photo Credit- Sam Greene/ The Enquirer/ USA Today Network via Imagn Images
  • Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow’s injury may have given Taylor a pass on this season, especially if he can keep the Bengals in contention until Burrow’s return. However, there’s a couple scenarios that could ignite the hot seat. 1) If the Bengals completely fall out of contention, even after acquiring Joe Flacco, perhaps Cincinnati’s front office will see it a justification for moving on from a coach who seems to be squandering some world class offensive talent in their prime. 2) Even worse would be keeping them in contention yet still falling short upon Burrow’s return. You have to wonder if the front office is not just a little frustrated with not living up to expectations.
Photo Credit- Bryan Bennett/ Getty Images
  • Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills: Don’t get me wrong, I find this to be highly unlikely. I think the Bills will eventually win the AFC East and make a deep playoff run, but Buffalo’s last two games opens the possibility. The Bills are vulnerable, especially defensively, and that is McDermott’s specialty. If Buffalo should stumble down the stretch and miss the playoffs, I think the axe could fall. The inability to get over the hump in the postseason and wasting some prime Josh Allen years could weigh in as well.
Photo Credit- Eric Christian Smith/ Associated Press
  • Demeco Ryans: I’m listing Ryans simply because Houston has a history of making rash coaching decisions. Ryans has made the playoffs every year he’s been head coach, but they have an uphill climb to get there this season. The regression of CJ Stroud and stagnation of the offense may be all the justification the Texansownership would need.

Short Leash

Photo Credit- Robert Deutsch/ Imagn Images
  • Aaron Glenn, New York Jets: I never thought we’d get here, but the Jets are an absolute embarrassment this season. They are undisciplined and make way too many mental mistakes. That’s coaching, and they’ve gotten worse as the season has progressed. Maybe Glenn will be able to scapegoat Justin Fields and not having his quarterback, but the problems are deeper. The Jets franchise has proven to be impatient in the past, so a one and done for Glenn isn’t out of the question.
Photo Credit- Jeffrey McWhorter/ Associated Press
  • Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones certainly does things his own way, and he’s proven to be impulsive and impatient before. Schottenheimer was a surprise hire and he’s been decent. The Cowboys’ issues have been defensive, not Schottenheimer’s forte, and he had nothing to do with trading away their best defensive player. Still, it wouldn’t surprise me if Jones moves on if Dallas misses the playoffs.
Photo Credit- Charlie Riedel/ Associated Press
  • Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders: Pete Carroll’s career resume should earn him a longer leash, but this is the Raiders. Whether in Vegas, Oakland or Los Angeles, the Raiders have a long history of quickly moving on from head coaches. Make no mistake, the Raiders are very bad and much worse than many expected. It wouldn’t be a total shock to see Carroll gone after one season.

No Heat, but…

Photo Credit- Albert Cesare/ The Enquirer/ USA Today Network via Imagn Images
  • Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers: Let me be clear, Tomlin won’t get fired unless Pittsburgh doesn’t win another game this season. However, I think a mutual decision to part ways is certainly in the cards if Tomlin can’t lead Pittsburgh to at least the second round of the playoffs.
Photo Credit- Ric Tapia/ Getty Images
  • John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens: Even if Baltimore’s season continues on its downward spiral, there is no way Harbaugh would get fired. But, maybe he’d get moved up to the front office. Some kind of mutual agreement type thing. Highly unlikely, nearly impossible in my mind.
