Pre-Combine Chicago Bears Seven Round Mock Draft

Just because I’m addicted to mock drafts and I’m already bored with the offseason, I thought I’d publish my first seven rounder for the Chicago Bears. A lot can change between now and the draft. We’ll have the scouting combine in Indianapolis, where player rankings will start to come into more focus. Then, there’s free agency where team needs will be clarified. Individual pro days will eventually lead to a more refined idea of what players teams are focused on.

For now, this is how I see the draft going for the Bears:

ROUND ONE, PICK #12

Kelvin Banks Jr, OT, Texas

The Cowboys came calling and I assumed it was for Ashton Jeanty. I think a first round running back is a luxury pick, one the Bears aren’t in a position to make yet, so I accepted the deal to move down two spots and added an extra third round pick.

To my surprise, the Cowboys passed on Jeanty and I strongly considered him here, given Ben Johnson’s use of the two back system in Detroit, but I still think the trenches are where they’ll focus.

I believe the Bears will add two interior offensive linemen in free agency, leaving a need for another guard. Tyler Booker is the top guard on my board, but the 49ers grabbed him with the previous pick. Looking at offensive linemen and edge rushers, Banks was the top player on my board.

Some believe that Banks will kick inside to guard in the NFL, which would be fine considering the Bears still have a need there, but I think he has the physical tools to stay at left tackle. Braxton Jones has been a serviceable left tackle, especially given that he was a fifth round pick, but Banks offers a much higher ceiling.

ROUND TWO, PICK #39

Shemar Stewart, EDGE, Texas A&M

The Bears need a pass rusher to pair with Montez Sweat and I don’t think they’ll land a long term answer in free agency. Stewart is a freak athlete with the size to be a 4-3 defensive end in the NFL. Personally, I see him as a first round talent, but some inconsistencies in his game could push him into the second. If he’s there at number 39, the Bears have to pounce.

Stewart has dominant potential as an edge rusher if his minor inconsistencies can be cleaned up. He and Sweat could form a fearsome duo.

ROUND TWO, PICK #41

Grey Zabel, OT, North Dakota State

I have the Bears double dipping on the offensive line with one of my favorite players in the draft. Right now, Zabel is listed as a tackle, but I think he’ll find a home as a starting guard. He does give the Bears positional versatility as he’s excelled at all five positions across the offensive line.

ROUND THREE, PICK #72

Deone Walker, DT, Kentucky

The Bears stay in the trenches and add an absolutely massive human being to their defensive line. Walker has the size to be a run stuffer and the athleticism to be a disruptive interior pass rusher.

ROUND THREE, PICK #76

Kyren Lacy, WR, LSU

With the pick acquired from Dallas earlier, I have the Bears adding another weapon to Caleb Williams’ arsenal. Lacy is more of a big bodied, contested catch type receiver like Keenan Allen than the take the top off the defense type that the Bears currently lack, but LSU receivers have excelled in the NFL and I think Lacy will carve out a nice role for himself in a Ben Johnson offense.

ROUND FIVE, PICK #149

Malachi Moore, S, Alabama

The Bears have an underrated need at safety. Kevin Byard was fine, but his best days are behind him and he’s a potential cap casualty. I have concerns about Jaquan Brisker’s health given that he missed the last 12 games of the season recovering from a concussion.

Moore is a ballhawk and excels in coverage. He’s also a decent tackler, though not a physical thumper. He’s a liability as a box safety, but if Brisker is healthy he can fill that role.

ROUND SIX, PICK #204

Luke Lachey, TE, Iowa

The Bears have needed a secondary tight end for years, they’ve tried adding one in free agency but the results have been severely underwhelming. Lachey never reached the levels of production many thought possible and he’s an average blocker. He’s also an older prospect, but given Iowa’s strong track record of producing high quality NFL tight ends he’s worth a shot in the sixth round.

ROUND SEVEN, PICK #235

Devin Neal, RB, Kansas

Many Bears fans are probably eyeing a running back earlier in the draft, but I don’t think it’s as high a priority as most. Neal’s home run threat upside offers plenty of potential for a seventh round pick.

ROUND SEVEN, PICK #242

Jermari Harris, CB, Iowa

In the NFL, a team can never have enough depth at corner. Harris has limitations, but has shown sufficient ball skills to make him worth a late seventh round pick.

SYNOPSIS

If free agency goes the way I, and many Bears fans hope, Chicago will have completely revamped and vastly improved their offensive line in one offseason. Banks could be the long term answer at left tackle or, at worst, a high end starting guard. Zabel has starting potential and at minimum offers depth across the entire offensive line.

Stewart and Walker have the potential to significantly upgrade the Bears defensive front, making them a formidable unit.

Lacy and Lachey should both carve out roles in Ben Johnson’s offense, while Moore has starting potential.

Neal and Harris could add valuable depth if they can make the 53 man roster.

It’s worth noting that the Bears could gain an extra third round pick should Ian Cunningham land the general manager position in Jacksonville.

Into the Offseason

The 2024/25 NFL season is in the books. There is still no three-peat champion in NFL history. A few quick thoughts as we embark upon the long, long march to the 2025/26 season…

Super Bowl LIX- I wish I had been more firm in my conviction that the Philadelphia Eagles were the team to dethrone the Kansas City Chiefs. I picked them, but I left a sliver of doubt because of KC’s legacy. Philly left no doubt on the field. This was as thorough a domination of a Super Bowl as we’ve ever seen.

The Eagles were superior at every level and every position. There wasn’t a single area in which they weren’t clearly the better team. Even the Chiefs collection of legendary championship stars: Mahomes, Kelce, Chris Jones looked pedestrian. KC’s vaunted coaching geniuses, Andy Reid & Steve Spagnuolo were thoroughly outclassed by Nick Sirianni, Kellen Moore and the real star of the Super Bowl, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Hell, even the maligned Eagles kicker, Jake Elliott, outshone the best clutch kicker in the game.

The only gripe I have, and it’s a minor one, is awarding the MVP to Jalen Hurts. Hurts was good, but Philly won this game because of an absolutely dominate defense. A defensive player should have gotten the nod. Any of Josh Sweat, Zack Baun or Cooper DeJean would have been a fine choice. Alas, this is an award that invariably goes to the star quarterback of the winning team and Jalen Hurts is worthy of recognition for his accomplishments.

Building a Champion- Howie Roseman deserves all the accolades he’s gotten for building the Eagles roster into the best in the NFL, but I think most people are paying more attention to the free agency moves and trades to acquire talent instead of the masterclass in drafting he’s displayed the last few years.

Going back to the 2021 draft, he was able to work out a deal with rival Cowboys, to jump the rival Giants and land DeVonta Smith. The price paid was minimal as well.

How about 2023? He again moved up to get his guy. Maybe he didn’t need to move up one spot for Jalen Carter. The Bears were obviously not interested (more on that later), but they were also obviously shopping the pick. Howie didn’t take the chance of another team jumping him and a fourth round pick is a small price to pay.

Last year’s draft might have been the best yet. I liked Quinyon Mitchell for the Eagles but thought they would have to move up for him. Howie stood pat and let Mitchell come to them. He then doubled down on corners by taking Cooper DeJean in the second round ( I had DeJean going in the first round). The Eagles collapse in 2023 was mainly because their secondary imploded down the stretch. In one draft, Howie Roseman remade it.

Going further, the Eagles and Chiefs met in the Super Bowl two short years ago. The Eagles entered this Super Bowl with an almost completely new defense. The 2022/23 Eagles defense was good, this 2024/25 Eagles defense is historically great. It wasn’t just Vic Fangio, it was Howie Roseman deftly remaking and retooling the defensive roster.

Jalen Carter- A lot of people on Bears social media continue to gripe about the Bears passing on Carter, and I get it. Carter looks like he may well be the next Aaron Donald. He’s dominant and just going to get better. I remember being disappointed when Donald went one pick ahead of the Bears in 2014, then watching him become the most dominant defensive player since Reggie White. I wanted Donald, and I’d love to have a guy like Carter.

The thing is, there’s no guarantee Carter would have become the player he is in Chicago. There were character red flags coming out of Georgia and I’m not alone in questioning his maturity.

He landed in Philadelphia, who had seasoned veterans like Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham to mentor him. Then he got a defensive mastermind in Vic Fangio to coach him up and unleash his potential.

Chicago had none of that. Carter’s natural, physical talent was undeniable, but we’ve seen many a physical talent flame out in this league when they don’t have the proper coaching and guidance. Maybe he would have excelled in Chicago, but my instinct says he would never have gotten to be as good as he already is in Philly. It was a risk a young, rebuilding team like the Bears couldn’t take.

Kellen Moore- The Saints have hired Moore as their next head coach, thereby completing the 2025 coaching cycle. The Saints job was perhaps the least desirable of the seven available. New Orleans continues to be in cap hell because of years of kicking the can down the road. They’ve got a mix of aging veterans and young talent with holes at every level of their roster. This is not a quick rebuild, but one that could take years.

Still, they did well landing Moore. He just won a Super Bowl by building an offense around the strength of the players at his disposal. I said a couple weeks ago that a possible Moore hire would garner a B grade from me, I’ll up that to a B+. It’s a solid hire for the Saints.

Here’s my rankings of the new head coaches heading into 2025:

  1. Ben Johnson, Bears
  2. Mike Vrabel, Patriots
  3. Aaron Glenn, Jets
  4. Kellen Moore, Saints
  5. Pete Carroll, Raiders
  6. Liam Coen, Jaguars
  7. Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys

Quarterback Carousel- Free Agency will be very interesting, as always, but perhaps more so this year. There are eight teams with decisions to make at quarterback, with two more lurking as possibilities. How things shake out will go a long way in determining how the draft will go.

Speaking of the draft, it’s a down year for quarterbacks. I think only 2 will go in the first round, and neither would have cracked the first round last year.

Here’s the starting caliber quarterbacks that I think could be available via free agency or a trade:

  • Kirk Cousins
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Sam Darnold
  • Russell Wilson
  • Justin Fields

There’s also some veterans that are better suited to be backups that could land a starting role as a bridge QB. Those include Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Gardner Minshew & Mac Jones.

Now, here’s the teams that I think are in play for a QB:

  • Jets- I like them to sign a cheap veteran then look to draft a QB.
  • Browns- The best they could possibly hope to land is Fields. They do have the number two pick in the draft.
  • Steelers- They’ll bring back either Wilson or Fields. My guess is Wilson.
  • Colts- I don’t think they’ll give up on Richardson, yet, but I think they’ll kick the tires on Cousins and Rodgers.
  • Titans- My gut says they’ll roll with Levis for one more season and either trade the first pick or take either Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter.
  • Raiders- They’re in play for everyone. If the Steelers let Wilson walk, this is likely where he lands. They’re also a team to watch as far as the draft goes.
  • Giants- I think they’re major players for Cousins, Darnold & Fields. With the head coach and GM on incredibly hot seats, I’m not sure they want to tie their fortunes to a rookie from this class.
  • Vikings- They’re either handing the keys to McCarthy or bringing back Darnold on the franchise tag. My gut says they’ll tag Darnold.
  • Saints- It’s going to be a lengthy rebuild in NOLA. Does Kellen Moore want Carr or not?

The Falcons aren’t in the quarterback market but they do have to decide what to do with Cousins. The 49ers need to extend Purdy, which could have repercussions throughout the league.

Free Agency- Teams have until March 12 to re-sign or tag their own players, so right now it’s pure speculation on who might be available. That being said, here’s my wishlist for the Chicago Bears:

  • Trey Smith, OG, Kansas City
  • Drew Dalman, OC, Atlanta
  • Josh Sweat, EDGE, Philadelphia

SUPER BOWL LIX

I wanted to write a longer, more detailed analysis of the upcoming Super Bowl, but unfortunately I’ve been stricken with a seasonal virus. So, this the condensed version.

On paper, everything tells me the Eagles should win this. They came so close two years ago and they’re actually a much better team this time around. The defense is dominant and Saquon Barkley may well be the X factor.

The problem is the team on the other side is full of X factors. Andy Reid & Steve Spagnuolo have a long track record of making the right decisions in the biggest moments. Mahomes has made a career of being clutch. Kelce always seems to raise his game on the biggest stages.

As I look at this matchup, on paper I think Philly has the advantage, factor in the intangibles and KC pulls even. Go one step further, and kicker Harrison Butker is why I think the Chiefs are slight favorites.

If I had to put money on it, I’d follow my own advice of never betting against Mahomes and Reid. But, there’s no money involved so I’m going to follow my gut. This is Philly, and more importantly, Saquon Barkley’s year.

Give me the Eagles (+1.5).

Philadelphia 33

Kansas City 24

Super Bowl LIX MVP- Saquon Barkley

2025 NFL MOCK DRAFT 1.0

My first mock draft of 2025. The top 30 positions are set with only Philadelphia and Kansas City’s yet to be determined. Mock drafts prior to the combine and free agency are really just a guessing game, but it helps to get started learning these players early.

I don’t think Tennessee will pass on the rare opportunity to draft a franchise QB. To me, Ward is the clear QB1 in this class.
Cleveland has been oddly committed to Deshaun Watson and even though he’s likely to miss a significant portion of the 2025 season, there’s a good chance they won’t pick his replacement here. Carter is the top player on my board and will give the Browns a fierce pass rushing tandem.
The Giants are desperate for a QB in what could be a make or break season for their head coach and general manager. Sanders wouldn’t have cracked the first round in last year’s class, but he’s a definite upgrade over Daniel Jones & the other warm bodies they trotted out in 2024.
Building from the trenches is a Mike Vrabel staple, with Abdul Carter off the board, New England fortifies the offensive line with Campbell.
Jacksonville goes with the dynamic two way player, Hunter, who will contribute on both sides of the ball for the Jaguars.
Las Vegas desperately needs a QB, but they’ll probably need to go the veteran bridge route. They also need more pass catchers. Pairing McMillan with Brock Bowers would give the Raiders an enticing one-two punch.
The Jets have a question to answer at QB, and whether or not they’ll retain WR Davante Adams. There’s also some holes on defense, but the most glaring need is offensive line. Banks could stick at tackle or kick inside to guard.
Pairing Johnson with Jaycee Horn would give Carolina two formidable, lock down level cornerbacks.
I have the Saints addressing their pass rush by adding the athletic Williams.
Chicago’s biggest issues are on the offensive line and new head coach, Ben Johnson, knows full well the importance of a dominant line. Booker is a pure guard, but, in my opinion, he’s also the best offensive lineman in the draft.
If Graham makes it this far down the board, I imagine the Niners will be sprinting to the podium to announce this pick.
Dallas has needed a workhorse RB for awhile, adding Jeanty makes a ton of sense, but we are talking about Jerry Jones’ Cowboys.
If not for injury concerns, Simmons would probably be the first offensive lineman off the board. Miami has never been afraid to take chances on talent.
Warren gives me Sam LaPorta vibes. Indy will be happy to add him to their offense.
After years of adding offensive skill position players in the first round, Atlanta finally goes defense and adds Pearce to their pass rush.
Arizona could go offensive line here, or add another wide receiver, instead I have them adding a pass rusher in Scourton.
Cincinnati may or may not lose Tee Higgins in free agency. If so, Burden will fill that role in the Bengals offense.
Starks is worthy heir to Seattle’s legendary Legion of Boom.
Tampa may lose two starting linebackers this offseason, Walker is the best off ball linebacker in the class.
Denver got virtually no production from their tight ends in 2024, that will change with Loveland.
Egbuka will be a perfect complement to George Pickens in Pittsburgh’s passing game.
Jim Harbaugh brings in a familiar face in Grant to bolster the Chargers defensive line.
Stewart is exactly the type of pass rusher that Green Bay loves.
Morrison should help shore up Minnesota’s pass defense.
Houston’s offense took a step back in 2024, largely due to injuries in their receiving corps, but also a lack of depth on the offensive line, Conerly can help remedy that.
Rams add Revel to a young, ascending defense.
Nolan is the kind of player that fits Baltimore’s style of defense.
Green could be a perfect pass rushing complement to Aidan Hutchinson for Detroit.
Barron would bring positional versatility to Washington’s secondary.
Buffalo needs to continue adding to their defense to combat the elite offenses in the AFC. Harmon helps solidify their defensive line.
Membou could take over at guard if Philadelphia loses Mekhi Becton in free agency or eventually succeed Lane Johnson at tackle.
Kansas City’s offensive line showed cracks this season and they might lose Trey Smith in free agency. Ersery could play guard or tackle.

Coaching Carousel

Seven teams will have new head coaches in 2025, including my beloved Chicago Bears. Here’s some quick thoughts on the six coaches that have been hired, and the one opening still remaining.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS- Robert Kraft did Jerod Mayo dirty and made a mockery of the Rooney Rule, but the hiring of former Titan’s head coach and Patriots legend, Mike Vrabel, is a home run.

While I don’t believe Vrabel was a perfect fit for every job opening (more on that in a bit), he is probably perfect for New England. Former head coach, Jerod Mayo, famously called his team soft during the 2024 season. That will not be an issue under Mike Vrabel. Vrabel will make the Patriots a tougher football team.

I’m not as sure about bringing back offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels to help further Drake Maye’s development. McDaniels has been an abysmal failure as a coach when not paired with Tom Brady. Brady is the GOAT and he’s more responsible for McDaniels’ success than the other way around.

Overall, I give the Patriots hiring of Mike Vrabel an A, even if I don’t respect the process they took to get there.

CHICAGO BEARS- This move should have come a year ago. Everyone outside of the Bears top brass questioned the wisdom of pairing of a first overall picked quarterback with a defensive minded coach who had left a lot to be desired in his two years at the helm.

The Bears exacerbated the issue by letting Matt Eberflus choose the offensive coordinator who would be tasked with Caleb Williams’ development. Like every other decision made during his short tenure, Eberflus chose wrong.

Ben Johnson was the most sought after coach alongside Mike Vrabel. Rumors have it that he wanted the Bears job last year, but Chicago retained Eberflus. We’re lucky, as Bears fans, that Caleb Williams still held the allure for Johnson a year later.

Every team with a young franchise caliber quarterback wants to find their own Sean McVay or Sean Payton. I can’t say with absolute certainty that Ben Johnson is that, but he was easily the best candidate for that mantle available.

The Bears, for once, deserve a lot of credit for landing the big fish. They targeted Johnson early and when he became available to hire, they wasted no time.

I give this hire an A+. After a monumentally disappointing season, the hiring of Ben Johnson has revived my hopes in the Bears future.

NEW YORK JETS- Aaron Glenn played for the Jets and he was probably the top first time head coaching candidate from the defensive side of the ball. Glenn did amazing work with Detroit’s banged up defense until they ran out of gas against Washington.

I like Glenn and I think he’s deserving of a head coaching position, I just feel like the Jets have taken this road before. The Jets still have the same issues; a meddling owner and a forty something quarterback whose best days are far, far behind him.

I’ll grade the hiring of Glenn as a solid B, with the caveat that Glenn has a tall task in front of him. At least the Jets paired him with a familiar face at GM, who hopefully will be on the same page.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS- I never bought the notion that Vegas was a realistic option for Ben Johnson. The fact that none of the other available top offensive minds ever considered the Raiders confirms my view.

The Raiders need an NFL caliber starting QB and they have no real viable path to landing one this year. The Raiders are also in dire need of a culture change, but that is more on ownership than any coach they could have hired.

If Tom Brady can instill patience in Raiders ownership and Pete Carroll has the juice, at 73 years old, to see through what will not be a quick rebuild, this hiring will be great. Carroll knows how to build a winning culture. Until those questions are answered, however, I’ll give this grade a B.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS- Jacksonville botched this from the start. The Jaguars’ ownership are the only people in the known universe that didn’t realize how despised former GM Trent Baalke was.

Had they parted ways with Baalke at the same time they fired Doug Pedersen, they might have been able to land Ben Johnson. I still think Chicago offered the better situation, but the chance to handpick his own GM might have been enough for Johnson to pick Jacksonville.

Liam Coen deserves his own share of criticism here. After pulling out of consideration, presumably because of Baalke, and agreeing to an extension with Tampa Bay, Coen childishly ghosted the Bucs after Baalke was let go while he worked out a deal with Jacksonville.

Coen may end up as a decent head coach, but the whole situation was ugly for all involved, because of that I can only give it C- grade.

DALLAS COWBOYS- This one makes sense only in the mind of Jerry Jones. Moving on from Mike McCarthy is one thing, but elevating his former offensive coordinator, who didn’t even call plays, is just downright insane. Philadelphia OC, Kellen Moore, was reportedly interested in returning to Dallas and the Cowboys didn’t even wait to get an in person interview with him.

Brian Schottenheimer has a good pedigree, but he has the look of nothing more than a yes man for Jerry Jones. The Cowboys championship window might not have been opened very wide with McCarthy, but it’s completely closed now. Those high priced stars will soon realize this, if they haven’t already.

I’m grading this hire as a D, only because I don’t feel like being mean enough to hand out an F.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS- This is the only head coaching opening yet to be filled. The Saints have their perennial salary cap issues, a serviceable but uninspiring QB and holes on both sides of the ball. No matter who gets the job, it may be a couple years of treading water before they’re actually a viable contender.

My instincts tell me Kellen Moore is the favorite for the job. New Orleans seems to be waiting on the chance to interview him in person. If it doesn’t work out with Moore, I think Mike McCarthy is the fall back.

I’d grade Kellen Moore a B hire. Mike McCarthy would be a B-.

Changing Direction

When I started writing this blog a decade ago, I just wrote whatever came to mind. I posted a lot of political writings, some very divisive political writings. Starting today, that changes.

From this point forward, Nickels and Dimes blog will be exclusively about sports, mostly the NFL and the Chicago Bears specifically. I’ll do my mock drafts, which have become one of this blog’s staples, as well as sharing thoughts on news and happenings in the world of sports.

While the main focus of this blog will be the National Football League, I’ll occasionally delve into Major League Baseball, the NBA, college football and basketball and even golf. Don’t be surprised if at some point I write about hockey, auto racing or the Olympics, but mainly this will be dedicated to professional football.

I’ve scrubbed my archives of all non sports related posts, leaving up my past sports themed posts (I enjoy going back to see my predictions). I thought about changing the name of my blog, but Nickels and Dimes is actually perfect for football.

I’ll start later this week with my thoughts on the recent coaching changes and predictions for the upcoming Super Bowl.

Thanks for reading.

N&D NFL DRAFT RECAP

ARIZONA CARDINALS
The Cardinals had a ton of picks, twelve total, including 7 in the first three rounds.
They didn’t overthink their first pick, they wisely stayed put and took Marvin Harrison Jr, who I believe was the best player in the draft.
Darius Robinson was a slight reach, in my opinion, but he does fill a need.
Max Melton was an excellent pick, while Trey Benson & Isaiah Adams were solid.
I felt they reached a bit on Tip Reiman, but with their plethora of picks, they could afford to.
If a couple of their day three picks hit, this is an excellent class.
MY GRADE: A
ATLANTA FALCONS
The Falcons can try to spin this any way they want, but taking Michael Penix Jr in the first was a colossal mistake, and it has nothing to do with the player.
They gave 100 million, guaranteed, to Kirk Cousins a little over a month ago. That’s win now money, then they draft for the future?
Comparing this to what Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers/ Jordan Love is stupid because Green Bay was already a Super Bowl contender at the time. Atlanta hasn’t been to the postseason since 2017! Plus, Penix is already 24. He’s ready to go now, he doesn’t need to spend a few seasons on the bench.
To their credit, the Falcons spent most of the rest of the draft addressing their defense, which they should have done with their first pick!
Brandon Dorlus in the fourth round was a particularly good pick.
It’s not a bad class, but the monumental blunder at the top drives this grade down.
MY GRADE: D
BALTIMORE RAVENS
The Ravens are one of the best drafting teams in the NFL, so I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt when they seemingly reach.
Which, I think they did on Roger Rosengarten a little.
Adisa Issac, Devontez Walker & TJ Tampa are the kind of value picks I’m used to seeing from Baltimore.
This isn’t the usual home run class I’m used to from the Ravens, but it’s still very good.
MY GRADE: B
BUFFALO BILLS
The Bills worked themselves out of the first round with a couple trades, but they made the most of their day two picks.
Keon Coleman is the type of big bodied, jump ball WR that will thrive with Josh Allen.
Cole Bishop was one of my favorite players in the draft.
Sedrick Van Pran-Granger was tremendous value in the fifth round.
MY GRADE: B+
CAROLINA PANTHERS
The Panthers did a decent job of getting Bryce Young some help.
I didn’t have a first round grade on Xavier Legette, but many did.
Jonathan Brooks was the top RB in the draft.
Ja’Tavion Sanders was my TE2, getting him in the fourth is a steal.
I feel they reached a bit on Trevin Wallace.
MY GRADE: B
CHICAGO BEARS
The Bears had as good of a first round as you can have. Caleb Williams & Rome Odunze are slam dunk picks.
The rest of their draft was a bit of a head scratcher.
Kiran Amegadjie has upside, but he’s a project.
Taking a specialist, even one as good as Tory Taylor, before the seventh round is always going to earn my scorn.
Austin Booker is a nice edge prospect, but they had to burn a 2025 fourth to come back in to get him because of drafting a punter.
The first round keeps this grade high, though,
MY GRADE: A
CINCINNATI BENGALS
I like the Bengals draft, except the double dip at TE.
Amarius Mims might finally settle their offensive tackle problem.
Erick All felt like a reach to me.
Kris Jenkins & McKinnley Jackson will help give Cincy a stout defensive line.
Jermaine Burton trained with former Bengals great TJ Houshmandzadeh, so they should know him well.
Josh Newton in the fifth is solid value.
MY GRADE: B+
CLEVELAND BROWNS
The Browns didn’t have a first round pick due to the Deshaun Watson trade, which is yet to pay dividends.
Michael Hall Jr is a solid addition to their defensive line.
Zak Zinter will be an anchor on the offensive line once he recovers from his injury.
Jamari Thrash will contribute early.
MY GRADE: C
DALLAS COWBOYS
The Cowboys made a couple moves down the board that might have cost them players they were targeting.
In the first, they missed out on Graham Barton, but landed Tyler Guyton, a very good secondary choice.
Later, they missed on Jonathan Brooks, but Cooper Beebe will help solidify the interior offensive line.
Marshawn Kneeland could develop into a solid pass rushing partner for Micah Parsons.
I felt they reached on Marist Liufau, but otherwise a solid draft despite the disappointments.
MY GRADE: B
DENVER BRONCOS
The Broncos pick of Bo Nix at #12 reeks of desperation.
Jonah Elliss is a solid pass rushing addition.
Troy Franklin gives them a deep threat as well as familiarity with Nix.
Kris Abrams-Draine & Audric Estime were good value picks.
MY GRADE: C-
DETROIT LIONS
It’s hard to find fault with the Lions draft, even the double dip at corner, which was their biggest weakness.
Terrion Arnold & Ennis Rakestraw Jr could be a solid duo for years.
Mekhi Wingo & Christian Mahogany are good value picks.
The only negative I can find is the lack of an edge rusher.
MY GRADE: A
GREEN BAY PACKERS
The Packers had an up and down draft.
Jordan Morgan was a reach in the first.
Edgerrin Cooper & Javon Bullard were solid picks.
Marshawn Lloyd is a good RB, but questionable pick considering the investment they already made at the position.
Ty’Ron Hopper was another reach.
Kitan Oladapo & Kalen King were good value picks in the secondary on day three.
MY GRADE: C+
HOUSTON TEXANS
The Texans continue their stellar offseason, building off last season’s success, with a solid draft.
Kamari Lassiter fills one of their biggest needs.
Blake Fisher, Calen Bullock & Cade Stover were all solid picks.
Jawhar Jordan & LaDarius Henderson were good day 3 values.
MY GRADE: B+
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
The Colts are obviously comfortable with the medicals on Laiatu Latu, who could be the best pass rusher in the class.
Adonai Mitchell is a solid weapon for the passing game.
Matt Goncalves & Tanor Bortolini are good additions to the offensive line.
Not addressing the secondary until day 3 seems like a mistake.
MY GRADE: B-
JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
I like that the Jaguars were able to trade down and still land Brian Thomas Jr.
Jarrian Jones was a reach, but Javon Foster & Jordan Jefferson were good value picks.
Cam Little at the end of the sixth is a fine place to take a kicker.
MY GRADE: B
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Drafting like this is why the Chiefs are back to back champions.
Xavier Worthy gives them the speed element they haven’t had since trading away Tyreek Hill.
Kingsley Suamataia might finally settle their left tackle situation.
Jaden Hicks was an absolute steal in the fourth round.
Hunter Nourzad provides depth behind Creed Humphrey.
MY GRADE: A
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
The Raiders wisely went best player available with their first two picks, Brock Bowers & Jackson Powers-Johnson.
They had slight reaches on Delmar Glaze & Decamerion Richardson.
Tommy Eichenberg was good value.
Overall, a decent class.
MY GRADE: B
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
The Chargers had a pretty good draft to kick off the Jim Harbaugh era.
Joe Alt is a slam dunk, that will help set the tone Harbaugh wants on the offensive line.
Ladd McKonkey is a do everything WR, who along with Brenden Rice & Cornelius Johnson will help offset the loss of Keenan Allen & Mike Williams.
Junior Colson will become an immediate leader on the Charger defense.
MY GRADE: A
LOS ANGELES RAMS
The Rams had a pretty solid draft.
Jared Verse immediately upgrades their pass rush.
The addition of Braden Fiske helps mitigate the loss of the retired Aaron Donald.
Blake Corum is a tough runner with home run ability,
Kamren Kinchens was good value in the late third round.
Beaux Limmer in the sixth is a potential steal.
MY GRADE: A
MIAMI DOLPHINS
The Dolphins addressed one pressing need, while totally ignoring another.
With both their edge rushers recovering from significant injuries, Chop Robinson fills a need.
But, double dipping at edge, even with a decent value in Mohamed Kamara, is questionable.
Adding another speedy back in Jaylen Wright, while only adding one offensive lineman, Patrick Paul, is equally perplexing.
MY GRADE: C-
MINNESOTA VIKINGS
The Vikings landed JJ McCarthy without sacrificing their second first round pick.
Dallas Turner was a steal at #17, except the price that Minnesota paid to move up to that spot.
Kyree Jackson was good value in the fourth.
MY GRADE: C+
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
The Patriots had a solid draft and did well to support their new franchise QB, Drake Maye.
Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker & Jaheim Bell are good pass catchers to grow with Maye. Bell was especially good value.
Caedan Wallace might have been a reach, but Layden Robinson was good value for the offensive line.
I still think New England might have been better served taking the haul offered for the #3 pick.
MY GRADE: B
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
The Saints hit a home run with their first two picks.
Taliese Fuaga is one of my favorite players in the class.
Kool-Aid McKinstry was a first round talent.
Spencer Rattler was a good flyer to take & learn behind Derek Carr.
Jaylan Ford & Khristian Boyd were solid value picks.
MY GRADE: A-
NEW YORK GIANTS
The Giants haven’t had a bona fide #1 WR since trading away Odell Beckham Jr, now they do with Malik Nabers.
Tyler Nubin fills the void left by Xavier McKinney’s departure.
Theo Johnson could develop into a top end TE.
Can’t help but wonder if the Giants will regret not grabbing a QB.
MY GRADE: B-
NEW YORK JETS
The Jets took the right path and upgraded their offensive line. Olu Fashanu will be a stud left tackle for the next decade plus.
Malachi Corley is another good weapon for their passing game.
Braelon Allen seems like an unnecessary luxury.
Jordan Travis could be a nice QB prospect to groom behind Aaron Rodgers.
Qwan’tez Stiggers is a good story that may pay dividends.
MY GRADE: B
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
The Eagles have become one of the better drafting teams in the NFL.
Getting Quinyon Mitchell without having to trade up was a coup.
Landing Cooper DeJean in the second might be the steal of the draft.
Jalyx Hunt is a project, but an uber-talented one.
Ainias Smith & Johnny Wilson give them more options in the passing game.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr was born to be an Eagle, and could fill a need.
MY GRADE: A
PITTSBURGH STEELERS
The reason the Steelers haven’t had a losing season in forever is because they’re consistently one of the best drafting teams in the NFL.
Troy Fautanu & Zach Frazier are immediate upgrades to their offensive line, while Mason McCormick provides valuable depth.
Roman Wilson will be a valuable piece of their passing attack.
Payton Wilson has significant injury issues, but he has first round talent.
MY GRADE: A+
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
I really like the Seahawks first two picks.
Byron Murphy II will be the engine that makes that defense go.
Christian Haynes should step in at guard and help solidify that offensive line.
I felt they reached a bit on day three, and I question taking those two Auburn CBs, Nehemiah Pritchett & DJ James, one should have sufficed.
MY GRADE: B-
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
I think the 49ers reached, badly, on their first two picks.
I like Ricky Pearsall, but I had a late second to third round grade on him.
Corner was a need, but I feel like they left better ones on the board when taking Renardo Green.
Dominick Puni & Malik Mustapha were solid picks, but the rest of the class is underwhelming.
MY GRADE: D+
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
The Buccaneers had as good a first two days of the draft as any team.
Graham Barton should be an anchor on that offensive line.
Chris Braswell should provide pass rushing juice immediately.
Tykee Smith has high end starter potential & Jalen McMillan should be a nice third WR.
Bucky Irving provides nice depth at RB. MY
GRADE: A-
TENNESSEE TITANS
The Titans took some big reaches early on.
JC Latham has massive potential, but I had him at the fifth best offensive tackle.
T’Vondre Sweat is another massive talent, but he comes with serious character concerns.
Cedric Gray was a solid pick & James Williams might be the steal of the draft.
MY GRADE: C-
WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
Time will tell if the Commanders made the right choice at QB in Jayden Daniels.
Jer’Zhan Newton was a steal in the second round, despite Washington being set at DT.
Mike Sainristil could prove to be one of the better corners in this class.
Brandon Coleman & Luke McCaffrey were solid value picks.
MY GRADE: A-

MY TOP FIVE DRAFT CLASSES:

1. PITTSBURGH STEELERS

2. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

3. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

4. CHICAGO BEARS

5. LOS ANGELES RAMS

N&D NFL DRAFT 2024

DAY TWO QUICK REACTIONS

ARIZONA CARDINALS

Day 1 Grade: B
Day 2 Grade: B+
I love the Melton pick. Benson & Adams are solid picks to fill needs. Reiman & Jones also fill needs but are each a bit of a reach.

ATLANTA FALCONS

Day 1 Grade: F
Day 2 Grade: B-
They finally focused on defense, but Orhorhoro over Johnny Newton is questionable. Trice was decent value.

BALTIMORE RAVENS

Day 1 Grade: B
Day 2 Grade: B
Rosengarten is a rare reach by the Ravens, albeit a small one. Isaac is more like a typical Baltimore pick; tremendous value.

BUFFALO BILLS

Day 1 Grade: N/A
Day 2 Grade: A
Buffalo traded out of the first round, but Coleman was a fringe first rounder. Bishop is one of my favorite players in the draft. Carter will help out on the defensive line.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

Day 1 Grade: C
Day 2 Grade: C+
Brooks was the top RB in the draft. Wallace was a reach.

CHICAGO BEARS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: C-
Amegadjie has tremendous upside, but he’s a project that won’t contribute much this season. They could have landed a pass rusher, defensive lineman, safety or interior offensive lineman that could’ve helped this year.

CINCINNATI BENGALS

Day 1 Grade: B+
Day 2 Grade: A
Jenkins was a great pick. Burton & Jackson are good value.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Day 1 Grade: N/A
Day 2 Grade: A
Hall was the player I mocked to them, fills a need. Zinter is great value, who would have gone higher if he wasn’t injured.

DALLAS COWBOYS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: B
Kneeland is a fine pick. Beebe is tremendous value. Liufau was a bit of a reach. Might have gotten too cute and cost themselves a decent RB.

DENVER BRONCOS

Day 1 Grade: D
Day 2 Grade: B
Elliss was a good pick at a position of need.

DETROIT LIONS

Day 1 Grade: A+
Day 2 Grade: A
They double dipped at corner, but it was their biggest need and Rakestraw is very good.

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Day 1 Grade: C-
Day 2 Grade: B+
Cooper & Bullard are great picks. Lloyd was a good pick, but not really a need. Hopper feels like an unnecessary reach.

HOUSTON TEXANS

Day 1 Grade: N/A
Day 2 Grade: A
Lassiter, Fisher & Bullock are all solid picks at areas of need.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Day 1 Grade: C
Day 2 Grade: B
Mitchell & Goncalves are solid picks, but still no corner.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Day 1 Grade: B
Day 2 Grade: C+
They focused on defense, their biggest need, but while Smith is a fine pick, Jones feels like a major reach.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Day 1 Grade: B-
Day 2 Grade: A+
Suamataia was a fringe first rounder and they got him at the back end of the second.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

Day 1 Grade: B+
Day 2 Grade: A
Powers-Johnson was clearly the best player available, much like their first round pick. Glaze, meanwhile, was a solid pick.

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: A

McConkey & Colson are solid picks with good value.

LOS ANGELES RAMS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: A
Fiske is one of my favorite players in the draft. Corum will give them solid production in a rotational role. Kinchens was good value.

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Day 1 Grade: B
Day 2 Grade: A
Paul was good value at a position of need.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Day 1 Grade: B

Day 2 Grade: N/A

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Day 1 Grade: B-
Day 2 Grade: B-
I like that they’re supporting their new QB, but while Polk is a decent pick, Wallace is a reach.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

Day 1 Grade: A+
Day 2 Grade: A
Good value on McKinstry.

NEW YORK GIANTS

Day 1 Grade: A+
Day 2 Grade: B+
Nubin was an excellent pick. Phillips was a slight reach.

NEW YORK JETS

Day 1 Grade: A+
Day 2 Grade: B
Corley is a solid pick.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Day 1 Grade: A+
Day 2 Grade: A-
DeJean is a home run pick. Hunt is a bit of a project & they passed on some solid LBs.

PITTSBURGH STEELERS

Day 1 Grade: B+
Day 2 Grade: A+
Frazier is an excellent pick. Roman Wilson is solid, and maybe one of the sleepers of this class. Payton Wilson has significant injury concerns, but he’s a tremendous talent.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Day 1 Grade: D
Day 2 Grade: C-
Green is a reach. Puni is a decent pick.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: A

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: A
Braswell & Smith are very good value. McMillan was a solid pick.

TENNESSEE TITANS

Day 1 Grade: C-
Day 2 Grade: D
Big reach on Sweat, who has serious character concerns.

Day 1 Grade: A
Day 2 Grade: A
Newton was tremendous value. Sainristil, Coleman & McCaffrey are solid picks. Slight reach on Sinnott.

DAY THREE MOCK DRAFT

Round 4

Round 5

Round 6

Round 7

N&D 2024 NFL DRAFT

NIGHT ONE REACTIONS

What a wild first round. It was pretty much chalk until Atlanta flipped the draft on its head.

I hit the following picks:

1. Caleb Williams, Bears

2. Jayden Daniels, Commanders

3. Drake Maye, Patriots

4. Marvin Harrison Jr, Cardinals

6. Malik Nabers, Giants

9. Rome Odunze, Bears

I predicted the following player/team matches, but not at the exact pick:

JJ McCarthy, Vikings

Quinyon Mitchell, Eagles

Brian Thomas Jr, Jaguars

Now, let’s have some instant reaction and grades:

GRADE: A+ The near consensus best QB in the last 4 years. A no brainer.
GRADE: A The only knock I can make on this pick is his slight frame and his playing style. Things will have to change if he’s to survive in the NFL.
GRADE: B- Huge upside. Patriots had offers for this pick that I probably would have taken, given the lack of talent on this roster.
GRADE: A+ Whether they had trade offers or not, Arizona played it smart and stayed put for the best player in the draft.
GRADE: A The best offensive tackle in the draft. I think a trade down would have helped the Chargers more, but perhaps there were no offers.
GRADE: A+ After Maye was gone, QB was off the table for the Giants. So, they get Daniel Jones a true #1 WR.
GRADE: C- Tackle was a position of need, this just felt a bit high for Latham, I think there were better tackles on the board.
GRADE: F This isn’t a reflection of the player, I love Penix, but what the hell are the Falcons doing? They just paid Kirk Cousins 100 million and then blindsided him with this pick.
GRADE: A Edge was the bigger need, and the Bears had their pick of the best in the draft, but this is how to build around your new franchise QB.
GRADE: A Credit where it’s due, the Vikings called the Giants bluff and didn’t make a major move up for McCarthy, they did get a little antsy by moving up one spot.
GRADE: A+ Jets did great to get Minnesota to swap spots and then took a long term franchise left tackle.
GRADE: D Major reach and I’m not sure I understand the trade for Zach Wilson anymore.
GRADE: B+ Easily the best player available, even if it wasn’t at a position of need.
GRADE: A+ One of my favorite players in the draft and a major position of need for the Saints.
GRADE: C I guess the Colts are good with his medicals, and Latu is probably the most polished edge rusher in the class, I just feel CB was a bigger need.
GRADE: A He’ll be the engine that drives this Seahawks defense.
GRADE: C+ This would be a steal if not for the price the Vikings paid to move up to this spot.
GRADE: B+ The Bengals have been searching for answers on the offensive line for years. Is Mims finally the answer?
GRADE: A Sean McVay might not have liked it, but the Rams made a very good pick here.
GRADE: B+ Fautanu gives the Steelers an inside/outside versatile offensive lineman.
GRADE: B Edge was a need, but I think offensive line was a bigger need.
GRADE: A+ A fast & physical corner, something the Eagles desperately needed, and they didn’t need to move up for him.
GRADE: B The Jaguars moved down and still got the WR I mocked to them. Defense was a bigger need, though.
GRADE: A+ I had the Lions moving up for a corner in my final mock. They did, but landed an even better one.
GRADE: C- It fills a position of need, but I didn’t have a first round grade on Morgan and there were better tackles available.
GRADE: A All the edge rushers worth this pick were gone, so the Bucs did a smart pivot to interior offensive line.
GRADE: C- Personally, I think Johnny Newton would have been the better pick here.
GRADE: B- I worry that Worthy is just all speed, but if anyone can find a way to make it work it’s Andy Reid and the Chiefs.
GRADE: A The Cowboys might have preferred Barton after trading down, but Guyton is a damn good consolation prize.
GRADE: B Best corner on the board fills a need for the Ravens.
GRADE: D I like Pearsall, but I had a late second/early third round grade on him.
GRADE: C Nothing against the player, just not sure the Panthers, who have many, many needs, needed to move up and secure a fifth year option on him.

Here’s my picks for Night Two, Rounds 2-3:

N&D 2024 NFL MOCK DRAFT 5.0

THE FINAL MOCK

We’re finally here. Draft Day! Hopes are renewed for every fanbase. I’ve done four months of mock drafts, and what follows is my best guess as to how the first round will go.

Before we begin, I’d like to make a few points and clarify some thoughts that went into making the selections I did:

  • The first three picks are about as solid as can be. The Chicago Bears are taking Caleb Williams. The Washington Commanders are taking a QB, either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, and the New England Patriots will likely take the one Washington doesn’t.
  • Picks 4-6 are where the intrigue lies in the top ten. The Arizona Cardinals at #4 could take perhaps the best overall player in the draft or trade down with a QB needy team or a team that covets MHJ. The Los Angeles Chargers at #5 have similar options, depending on what Arizona does. Meanwhile, the New York Giants at #6 could shock almost everyone by trading up for a QB or taking one at #6 if they’re still on the board.
  • The Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos & Las Vegas Raiders are the teams outside the top ten to watch as far as trading up for a QB goes. The Vikings are the favorites because they have more draft capital to offer in a trade and their odds increase if Arizona stays at #4 because the Chargers won’t trade with a division rival to let them get their franchise QB.
  • Speaking of the Denver Broncos, there’s been a major change in my final mock. Previously I’ve had them taking the fifth QB with their pick at #12, because they have the worst QB situation outside of Chicago, Washington & New England and they don’t pick again until the third round. I figured they had to be desperate. I’ve changed my mind, I think Sean Payton might be willing to gamble on a less heralded prospect while building up other parts of his roster. NOTE- I made this change before Denver traded for Zach Wilson, which only reinforced my belief that the Broncos will not go QB in the first round.
  • I’m not an NFL insider. I do not have access to any special information, any trades I project are purely speculative. Such is the case with the Philadelphia Eagles moving up for Quinyon Mitchell. I like the fit of team & player and Philly will have to move up from #22 to get him. Howie Roseman has proven to be aggressive to get the guys he wants.
  • Another team that has shown the willingness to be aggressive to get their guy is the Detroit Lions, which is why I projected them to move up to get a CB that I believe they like.
  • I think at least five QBs will go in the first round and there’s a good possibility of six, depending on how desperate a team is. Somebody is going to trade into the back end of the first round for one, and I think it could be the Las Vegas Raiders, who picked up some extra capital in a trade down earlier in the round that they could use to facilitate this trade with the Baltimore Ravens.
  • The Los Angeles Chargers will be the busiest team during the first round, orchestrating two moves down the board. First, from fifth to eleventh, then, from 23rd (a pick acquired in their first move) to 31st.
